State President holds talks with Japanese PM Abe

VGP – Viet Nam and Japan have agreed to continue fostering political trust through regular maintenance of high-level contacts and visits and enhancing cooperation and exchanges between their ruling parties and legislative bodies.

The agreement was reached at the talks between Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Thursday.

The two leaders welcomed the robust advancement of the two countries’ economic cooperation over the past time, agreeing to accelerate economic connectivity for mutual benefits.

They also agreed to boost Japan’s investment in Viet Nam and cooperate in carrying out mega projects in such fields like high-quality infrastructure, energy, human resource training, climate change adaptation, and in realizing Viet Nam’s industrialization strategy.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe affirmed Japan will continue backing Viet Nam’s socio-economic development through official development assistance. He has pledged to provide an addition of ¥16 billion in official development assistance for the Southeast Asian country’s project to enhance vocational training capacity.

State President Quang highly valued Japan’s official development assistance which has positively contributed to socio-economic development and improvement of competitiveness in Viet Nam.

The pair agreed to strengthen security-defense ties in a practical manner, deploy the Viet Nam-Japan Joint Statement on defense cooperation, and beef up cooperation in other domains like cyber security, military medicine, maritime law enforcement, transfer of sentenced persons, United Nations peace-keeping operations, bomb and mine clearance, and support for Agent Orange/Dioxin victims.

The two countries also agreed to bolster cooperation in education and training, agriculture, healthcare, environment, labor, urban development, and administration reform.

Both sides pledged to foster cooperation in organizing activities marking the 45th founding anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties in 2018 as well as cultural and sport activities to deepen mutual trust and understanding between people of the two coutnries.

State President Quang affirmed Viet Nam’s consistent position of actively collaborating with international partners to contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.

The two sides agreed to advance cooperation at regional and international forums on the issues of common concerns.

Regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the two leaders voiced their support for efforts for peace, stability and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, underlining the importance of settling differences via diplomatic and peaceful measures.

For the East Sea issue, the two sides agreed on the importance of ensuring peace, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, accelerating resolution of disputes through peaceful means, not using or threatening to use force, exercising self-restraint, and avoiding all actions that may harm trust.

They called for serious compliance with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, respect for diplomatic and legal processes, full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and early conclusion of a practical, effective and legally-binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC)./.
