The overseas shipment marked a milestone in introducing the product to one of the world’s most demanding markets.

In 2024, the Dai Viet Lotus Foods JSC, the lotus root exporter plans to export approximately eight containers of the roots with a total order value of nearly VND 7 billion (US$276,460) to the Asian market.

Apart from exporting lotus roots to Japan, the company has also worked with partners in the Republic of Korea to prepare for exporting the product to this country.

Lotus is one of the key sectors in the agricultural restructuring plan of Dong Thap province which is home to more than 1,800 hectares of lotus cultivation areas including 100 hectares of organic lotus, with an output of over 1,500 tons of product each year.

The cultivation area of lotus in Thap Muoi district accounts for over 30 percent of the total.

Statistics showed that Japan consumes around 100,000 tons of the root a year, while China requires two million tons.

Dong Thap province is set to host the second Dong Thap lotus festival in Cao Lanh City, its capital, from May 16 to 19 to promote the value of lotus flowers and attract tourists./.
