In 2022, Viet Nam had 14,790,075 hectares of forest, including 10,134,082 hectares of natural forests and 4,655,933 hectares of planted ones, according to MARD.

Localities that reported natural forest area declines in 2022 are requested to investigate the roots of forest shrinkage and take measures to restore lost forests, identify and punish those who are responsible for the reduction in forest area.

There were about nine million hectares of forest across the country in 1990. After 30 years, the figure increased to 14.6 million hectares, including 10.3 million hectares of natural forests.

In 2021, the country had 14,745,201 hectares of forest area including 10,171,757 hectares of natural forest and 4,573,444 ha of planted forest. The total area of forest meeting standards for calculating forest cover was 13,923,108 hectares, representing a forest coverage of 42.02 percent.

Under the sustainable forestry development program for 2021-2025, the Government aims for an annual growth of 5-5.5 percent in forestry production value and forest coverage of 42 percent.

The program also targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to contribute to the implementation of Viet Nam's commitments at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26)./.
