Weightlifter Tran Van Vinh earns Paris Olympic spot

VGP — Viet Nam's sixth Olympic ticket belongs to weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh after his successful competition at the ongoing IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand.

Vietnamese weightlifter Tran Van Vinh

Vinh took part in the men's 61kg category's group B along with teammate Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan.

The former world champion Vinh was one of Viet Nam's Olympic hopes in this competition which is the last qualification for Paris this July.

He lifted 131kg in the snatch, 163kg in the clean and jerk and 294kg in total to finish at sixth position.

The result was enough to help him maintain in the world top 10 athlete of the 61kg. It meant that Vinh ensured a slot at the Paris Games by regulation.

Tuan lifted 132kg in the snatch and secured a bronze. His injury however made him fail in the clean and jerk and he did not have overall ranking.

Two last Vietnamese athletes Pham Thi Hong Thanh and Quang Thi Tam will compete in the women's 59kg and 71kg categories, respectively, in the next days.

Prior to Vinh Viet Nam have had five Olympic slots for Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen (shooting), Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming) and Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing)./.
