WB helps upgrade waterway transport in Northern VN

VGP - The State Bank of Việt Nam, World Bank (WB), and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport jointly inked on November 10 a WB-funded project, worth of US $200 million, to improve the waterway transport system in Northern Việt Nam.

Such project is supposed to help perfect management capacity and upgrade infrastructure in two different waterway routes in Northern Việt Nam, namely the East-West (between Việt Trì and Quảng Ninh Provinces) and the North-South (between Hà Nội and Lạch Giang River); improve the Ninh Cổ estuary; construct modern ferry system in Việt Trì and Vĩnh Phúc ports.

Out of the total investment of US $200 million, WB donated US $170 million while the Vietnamese side contributed US $30 million.

The project will be under implementation from May 2009 to June 2012 in 15 provinces including Hà Nội (former Hà Tây), Hà Nam, Hải Phòng, Ninh Bình, Nam Định, Thái Bình, Hưng Yên, Hải Dương, Bắc Ninh, Bắc Giang, Vĩnh Phúc, Phú Thọ, Tuyên Quang and Quảng Ninh.
