WB donates US $177 mil. credit for education development in VN

VGP – Governor of the State Bank of Việt Nam (SBV) Nguyễn Văn Giàu and World Bank (WB) Country Director in Việt Nam Victoria Kwakwa have signed a sponsoring agreement and certain related legal documents for the School Education Quality Assurance Program and the Higher Education Development Policy Program on Saturday in Hà Nội.

The preferential loan was worth of US $177 million, with which the WB wanted to support the further development of Việt Nam’s primary and higher education systems.

The School Education Quality Assurance Program was granted US $127 million credit from the WB, £17-million non-refundable aid from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), US $3 million assistance from Belgium, and US $26.9 million corresponding capital from the Vietnamese Government.

The program will be put under implementation in 35 cities and provinces nationwide during the period of 2009-15, targeting to better primary education quality and to support disadvantaged students.

The WB also supported US $50 million credit for the Higher Education Development Policy Program, allowing the Vietnamese Government to modernize its higher education sector for the national insdustrilization process.
