VN treasures cooperative ties with UN

VGP – Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue stressed that Viet Nam treasured the valuable support of the UN and international friends in national liberation, renovation, and integration.

Mr. Hue made the point on September 14 in Geneva, Switzerland, at the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam’s membership of the UN and the 72nd anniversary of Viet Nam’s National Day.

The event drew the attendance of over 500 delegates including Ambassadors, Heads of delegations, UN representatives, and others.

Mr. Hue stressed that the UN should uphold its central role in maintaining peace, international security, conflict and dispute settlement on basis of peaceful solutions, UN Charter, international laws; promote partnership; implement global deals including the 2013 UN Agenda and Paris Climate Agreement.  

He affirmed that Viet Nam will continue to make positive and responsible contribution to UN’s mechanisms for peace, security, and sustainable growth. In the coming time, Viet Nam will engage more in peace-keeping mission; promote the implementation of the “Delivering as One (DAO) initiative of the UN in Viet Nam; work with other ASEAN member states to cement and deepen the partnership between ASEAN and UN on the basis of the UN Charter and ASEAN Charter.

On this occasion, Deputy PM Hue hoped that other countries support Viet Nam to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure.

Addressing the event, General-Secretary of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)  Mukhisa Kituyi congratulated Viet Nam for its achievements over the last 70 years especially since the country joined the UN 40 years ago.

The General-Secretary lauded Viet Nam’s contribution to the UN; praising the country’s determination to fulfill Sustainable Development Goals,  a project on reforming and developing social assistance in 2017-2025. 

Mr. Mukhisa Kituyi  highlighted Viet Nam’s leading role in materializing the DaO initiative and the UN’s initiative in response to El Nino. 

After the ceremony, the participants enjoyed an Ao Dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) performance and a photo exhibition on Viet Nam. 

WEF welcomes Viet Nam’s economic reform

The same day, Deputy PM Hue had a working session with Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Klaus Schwab, and WEF Managing Director Philipp Rosler. 

He said Viet Nam is preparing for the WEF’s participation in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week slated for November in Vietnam’s central city of Da Nang as well as the WEF on ASEAN in 2018. 

Mr. Klaus Schwab hailed Viet Nam’s development and economic reforms while Philipp Rosler pledged to continue encouraging and advising businesses of the WEF and Europe to operate in Viet Nam, and supporting Vietnamese start-ups.

The two sides agreed to coordinate to implement their agreement on developing Viet Nam’s economy in the future, and the WEF on ASEAN in 2018./.
