VN strives for greater role of AIPA

VGP - During their visit to the Philippines on January 15-16, Vietnamese legislators informed the agenda of the 31st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) to be hosted by Việt Nam in 2010, the action program of the country as Chair of ASEAN in the year, and exchanged views on the election of the AIPA Secretary General under the organization’s regulations.

The delegation, led by Mr. Nguyễn Văn Son, Chairman of the Vietnamese NA’s Committee for External Affairs and Chairman of the Organizing Board of the 31st AIPA General Assembly, held working sessions with leaders of the host country’s legislative body.

During the working sessions, the two sides touched upon measures to boost the relations between the two countries, especially in the fields of legislative cooperation, culture, economy, trade, education and tourism.

The Philippine top legislators said they would send a delegation to the 31st AIPA General Assembly, and closely work with Việt Nam to make the event successful to enhance AIPA’s role as the biggest inter-parliamentary organization in the region.

The hosts also agreed with Việt Nam to introduce a new secretary general for AIPA and hailed the country’s proposal to organize official annual meetings between presidents, leaders and secretariats of AIPA and ASEAN.
