VN still faces gender imbalance at birth

VGP – Up to 45 out of 63 provinces and cities in Viet Nam are struggling with sex ratio imbalance at birth with 120 boys per 100 girls, even 148.4 boys per 100 girls.

The news was announced by the General Department of Population and Family Planning under the Ministry of Health while summarizing one-year implementation of the Project on controlling imbalance of sex ratio at birth in the 2016-2025 period.

The Viet Nam Institute of Education Sciences reported that Viet Nam has ten cities and provinces with the highest rates of gender imbalance at birth namely Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Nam Dinh, Hoa Binh, Hai Phong, Vinh Phuc, Quang Ninh, and Quang Ngai.

The Population and Labor Statistics

Department under the General Statistics Office assessed that imbalance of sex ratio at birth was on the rise over the last recent years. Especially, in the North and midland regions, the ratio went up from 108.5 boys to 116.1 boys per 100 girls. The rate also picked up in the Mekong Delta Region from 109.9 boys to 114.1 boys per 100 girls. Meanwhile, sex ratio at birth dropped from 109.7 boys to 105.5 boys per 100 girls in the Central and Southeastern Regions./.
