On Friday, in Hà Nội, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the UN Development Program (UNDP) jointly held a conference to release the mid-term review on the National Goal Program on Poverty Alleviation in the period 2006-2008.

The National Goal Program was approved by the Government of Việt Nam on February 5, 2007 with the overall aim of reducing the poverty rate from 22% in 2005 to 10-11% by 2010.

However, the actual poverty alleviation rate is far beyond the set target when standing at around 13% at the end of 2008.

In the period 2006-2008, the annual poverty reduction rate was 2.6%.

The mid-term review raises some mid- and short-term proposals, focusing on the poorest areas.

In long term, the report suggests the simplification and harmonization of poverty reduction policies and programs; the combination of poverty reducing activities and other social policies; and the designing of overall social security strategies and systems.
