VN prepares to evacuate 28,288 people in anticipation of storm Goni

VGP – Vietnamese authorities are preparing to evacuate 28,285 coast residents to safer places and inform 49,884 vessels with 232,188 crew members to take shelter in response to Storm Goni.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control convened a meeting on November 5 to discuss preparations for Goni - the tenth storm to have hit Viet Nam this year.

Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting was quoted as saying that storm Goni will reach waters of the coastal localities from Quang Nam to Ninh Thuan before weakening to tropical pressure and making landfall.

On November 5 and 6, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Thuan will witness an average rainfall of 250-350 mm. Other localities including Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, and Phu Yen will see average rainfall of 100-200 mm.

From November 5-7, central provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Tri will expect rainfall of 100-200 mm.

Authorities also supported 4,050 workers of floating rafts to ashore. Specifically, the local authorities of Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa are preparing to bring 28,285 residents to safer places and imposed sea bans.

The Central Steering Committee reported that as of early November 5, tropical Storm Molave, the ninth to hit Vietnam this year, floods and landslides left 83 people dead or missing. In Nghe An province, 310 houses are being submerged. In Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, 24 communes are suffering from power disruption./.
