VN, Mexico cooperate to protect geographical indications

VGP – Viet Nam and Mexico will cooperate to protect geographical indications in agriculture and aquaculture.

The National Office of Intellectual Property of Viet Nam and the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in geographical indications on August 21 in Ha Noi.

Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Viet Nam Dinh Huu Phi reported that so far Viet Nam has protected 56 geographical indications including 50 of Viet Nam and six of foreign partners.

Viet Nam had 54 trademarks which are protected in Mexico. In the 2016-2017 period, the number of  Viet Nam’s brand name registration in Mexico surged 25%. On the other hand, in the 2010-2017 period, up to 83 Mexican brand names, five industrial models, eight innovations were protected in Viet Nam.

Via the MoU, both sides pledged to exchange experience to promote protection of geographical indications./.
