VN inks Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Overview of Viet Nam-United Nations relations

The Treaty, adopted in July 2017, prohibits a full range of nuclear-weapon-related activities, such as undertaking to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices, as well as the use or threat of use of these weapons.

After joining the Treaty, member nations testing or using nuclear weapons must be responsible for supporting other nations suffering from consequences of nuclear weapons.

As many as 52 nations have signed the Treaty, which will enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 nations.

The signing of the Treaty has manifested Viet Nam’s consistent policy to advocate peace and prohibition of nuclear weapons across the world./.
