IRRI pledges to help Việt Nam by providing technical advances, experts and training courses

These commitments aimed at boosting cooperation in rice production were made by the two sides during a late-July working tour of the MARD experts and their IRRI counterparts in the Philippines.

As the world’s second largest rice exporter, Việt Nam is now playing an important role in supplying food to the world market.

Việt Nam possesses two main rice-growing areas: the Red River Delta in the North and the Mekong Delta in the South. Annually, the country can produce 33-34 million tons of paddy rice, of which 8 million tons (equivalent to about 4 million tons of husked rice) are exported.

Mr. Tống Gia Khiêm, Head of the MARD delegation, said that the two sides had also agreed to jointly organizing the 50th anniversary of the establishment of IRRI in Việt Nam, scheduled in the 4th quarter of 2010.
