Việt Nam exports tra catfish to many countries |
Different kinds of fish, especially tra catfish, have seen sharp increases in export turnover since 2000.
In 2008 alone, Việt Nam earned US $4.5 billion from exporting seafood. The fish export volume amounted to over 825 tons, accounting for 66.7% of the total seafood export quantity. The tra export volume was more than 640 tons, making up 51% of the total quantity.
According to a FAO’s representative, Việt Nam currently ranks the 6th in seafood export, the 5th in aquaculture yield, and the 12th in fishing output in the world.
After inspecting 301 Vietnamese seafood enterprises in late April, the EU working team concluded that the EU markets need Vietnamese marine products.
MARD Deputy Minister Lương Lê Phương informed that FAO decided to fund the fishery industry with US $250,000 for poverty reduction and enhancement of competitiveness of seafood exports.
