US $66 million needed to secure transport safety in HN

VGP - Around US $66 million (VND 1,213 billion) will be poured into a project on transport safety in Hà Nội, in the period of 2011- 2015.

The information was announced at a seminar held in Hà Nội on March 11 by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the city authorities to discuss human resource development for transport safety in the city. 

Among the total sum, around VND 440 billion will be spent on upgrading 75 places which often suffer from serious traffic jams; 117 sites where severe accidents often take place; and 59 facilities for pedestrians.

Regarding the action plan on transport safety in the next five years, the authorities of Hà Nội looks to “a society of love and free from traffic accidents” in an effort to yearly reduce 7% of traffic fatalities and accidents. 

Hà Nội has over 300,000 of cars, 3.6 million motorbikes, 1 million bicycles and 300 pedicabs. Each month, around 2,400 new vehicles join in traffic here.
