UNFPA helps VN respond to gender-based, domestic violence

The project is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Viet Nam Farmers’ Union with technical assistance of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Viet Nam.

With a total budget of US$4.1 million, of which US$3.7 million is funded by the UNFPA, the scheme will be implemented during 2017-2021 to help increase the efficiency of the enforcement of the Law on Gender Equality, the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control and other policies and programs on prevention and response to domestic violence. 

It will also work to raise the capacity and responsibility of relevant state agencies and organizations; and change the awareness and behavior of policy-makers and the community, especially men, of prevention and response to gender-related violence and domestic violence.

In addition, the project looks to support the development and implementation of evidence and human rights-based policies and programs on addressing issues related to prostitution.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, MoLISA Deputy Minister Dao Hong Lan said that thanks to joint efforts of the Government and people, Vietnam has seen positive achievements in ensuring gender equality. 
However, there remain a lot of difficulties and challenges, requiring more effective solutions, Lan stated.

With the technical assistance from the UNFPA, she believed that the project will help narrowing gender inequality and contribute to the implementation of programs and strategies on gender equality, gender-based and domestic violence prevention and settlement of prostitution issues, as well as sustainable development goals in Viet Nam.
