UN hails VN's efforts in protecting, care for children

Ms. Ngan highly spoke of the support of the UN and UNDP for Viet Nam’s socio-economic development as well as the contributions of UNICEF to the sustainable growth and the protection of children’s rights in the country.

Viet Nam was the first country in Asia and second in the world ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990, said Ms. Ngan, adding that the nation has been praised from the international community as one of nations with strong political commitments and positive measures in establishing laws, policies and national programs for launching the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. 

To overcome consequences and respond to realistic requirements amidst international integration and promote children’s rights, the NA has made comprehensively adjustments to and approved the Children Law 2016, making it coherent with regulations in the convention and other relevant international commitments, she added.

The Vietnamese NA will continuously enhancing the supervision of the enforcement of regulations on child protection , she affirmed, highlighting the assistance from the UN not only in term of technical aspects but also improving the role of NA delegates. 

The NA Chairwoman suggested UN agencies continue coordinating with Viet Nam’s NA side for the protection, care and education of children. 

Besides programs and projects, Viet Nam hopes that UN agencies will enhance policy consultancy for the nation to better realize regulations on child protection, she said. 

Mr. Kamal Malhotra highly appraised Viet Nam’s NA and other functional agencies on their efforts in caring and protecting children’s rights, especially in legislation. 

He proposed the Vietnamese NA amend the concept of children in the Children Law 2016, making its suitable with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
