Adequate resources are needed to beef up science and technology transfer activities to pull up socio-economic scorecard in the Northwestern Region

Reports from the 14 regional provinces show that series of projects at different levels have been deployed, focusing on experiment of plants, domestic animals, intensive cultivation, crop restructuring, and plant protection to advance productivity, quality and efficiency of production.

Many of these projects have changed people’s cultivation habits. Massive production, higher income, and lower percentage of poor households have been recorded in some areas there.

However, the overall achievements do not come to expectation. Vast forest potentials still remain untapped, competitiveness of the local products is slowly improved. Post-harvest protection and processing of farm produce show shortcomings.

Deputy PM Trương Vĩnh Trọng, Head of the Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region, stressed that ebullient scientific and technological research, transfer and applications will generate more massive production establishments and then the region’s more impressive socio-economic scorecard.

To do that, relevant ministries and localities need to create most favorable conditions for organizations, scientists, academic entities, and businesses to set up partnership with local farmers, he said.

The region’s workforce must also be enabled to absorb scientific and technological applications by providing them with proper skills.

The relevant ministries and localities are tasked to shape a science and technology market in the Northwestern Region and provide adequate resources for related research and transfer activities.
