Speaking at the conference, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Department Alicia Rosa Bala stated that protecting and reinforcing the rights for children and women is one of the priorities pursued by ASEAN nations.

It was mirrored in ASEAN leaders’ commitments, the ASEAN Charter and the 2009-2013 ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community master plan, it was said.

Until now, all ASEAN members have ratified the Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

The meeting is expected to enhance the awareness of delegates, strengthen cooperation, share lessons and experiences in protecting women and children’s rights and citizenship by realizing these two conventions effectively.
