Under the newly-agreed decision on the overall plan for resettlement work of the Sơn La hydropower project, the State budget accounts for VND 14.3 trillion and the Electricity of Việt Nam (EVN) contributes VND 5.9 trillion.

By late 2009, 18,157 households had moved from the construction site. Hence, in 2010, the Government will have to resettle 2,103 remaining households, of whom 1,012 living in Sơn La Province and 1,091 locating in Điện Biên. The northern province of Lai Châu has finalized the relocation work.

To help people resettle and adapt to the new habitation, the Government will build 81 resettlement sites in both rural and urban areas.

The Government requests the People’s Committees of the three localities to follow the resettlement plan, ensure legal rights for inhabitants, and map out projects which support local people to resume their daily life and production activities

The Sơn La Hydropower Project is the largest and most complex dam project ever built in Việt Nam.

The construction of the US $3.2-billion project was started on December 2, 2005 and is expected to be completed by 2015/.
