Nuclear power on the agenda in VN

VGP - The 3rd Asian Nuclear Power Briefing 2015 was held by the Viet Nam Atomic Energy Agency and the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) in Ha Noi.

The event drew the participation of numerous delegates and experts from nations with developed nuclear industries, interested parties planning to expand nuclear power projects, and large international technology corporations.

The two day briefing on January 22-23 aims to provide an overall picture of the challenges that are associated with nuclear and how countries in the region are addressing key issues such as climate change, financing, safety, transparency and infrastructure development.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh said Viet Nam intends to develop up to 10,000 MW of nuclear energy capacity by 2030, with the first reactors starting construction soon.

It is anticipated by 2050, 25% of Viet Nam's energy needs will be met by nuclear power, he added.

UK Ambassador to Viet Nam Giles Lever stressed the importance of developing nuclear power as a replacement for fossil fuels like oil and coal.

In November 2013, the UK and Viet Nam signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in using atomic energy for peaceful purposes, he reiterated, adding that the UK is willing to send experts to Viet Nam to provide training and consultations for the country in this new field.

Viet Nam has signed several agreements for nuclear cooperation and information exchange with the USA, Russia, France, China, the Republic of Korea,Japan and Canada.

Now, Viet Nam is the 2nd largest market, after China in terms of nuclear power development in East Asia in what is a $10 billion market and expected to grow into a $50 billion market by the year 2030.
