At a national conference to review the implementation of policies for ethnic and mountainous regions in Ha Noi on April 11, participants, apart from praising achievements, raised difficulties facing the regions, including high rate of poor households, wide gap in development with the lowlands, and poor infrastructure.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed that ministries, sectors and localities should research, review, and adjust the policies to increase their effectiveness and make them in line with the present condition, such as the policies on housing and capital for production.

They should mobilize sources for infrastructure development in mountainous and remote areas, and give due attention to healthcare, education and vocational training, he said.

Hunger eradication and poverty reduction in ethnic and mountainous regions must be implemented synchronously and sustainably to prevent households from failing into poverty again. Favourable conditions must be created for ethnic groups to develop household-based business, improve their living standards, protect the forest and get rich from the forest.

At the conference, the Prime Minister also reviewed and gave instruction to each suggestion and recommendation submitted by the Committee on Ethnic Affairs related to policies on clean water supply, farming and housing land for ethnic people, those on resettlement for ethnic minorities people and the project to develop human resources in ethnic and mountain regions.
