Millions to become homeless due to sea level rise next ten years
VGP – At an international seminar themed "Impacts of climate change and urban inundation” held yesterday in Hồ Chí Minh City (HCMC), experts informed that in the next ten years, 22 million Vietnamese people may lose their houses due to sea level rise.

Data showed that HCMC, and Việt Nam in general, are among the ten most vulnerable cities severely affected by the global climate change.
If the sea level rises by one meter high within the next ten years, one fifth of Việt Nam’s territories will be submerged.
Since 2005, the temperature in HCMC has increased by two degrees Celsius and the sea level goes up by 1.5 cm per year. Heavy rains (over 100 mm) appear more regularly, causing prolonged inundation and messing up the city residents’ life.
Thus, through the seminar, the city hopes to seek for international experience and cooperation in order to settle challenges emerging from sea level rise.
Foreign experts pledged to support the city’s environment projects, including training courses for the HCMC Anti-Flood Program Management Center.
