Through the 18-month-long project, Việt Nam will develop a database on potential forestlands which can be exploited to serve activities within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol.

The project will also help accelerate afforestation/reforestation in line with clean development mechanism (AR-CDM) and encourage the private sector to join in AR projects.

Information and data of forestlands, useful for the reduction of greenhouse gas from forest degradation and deforestation throughout Việt Nam, will be collected.

The project is a follow-up activity under the JICA-sponsored research on capacity increasing in AR-CDM, carried out from December 2006 to March 2009.

According to JICA Việt Nam, a small-scale AR-CDM project was successfully conducted in the northern province of Hòa Bình. Then it was recognized by the United Nations as the first AR-CDM project in Việt Nam and the fourth in the world after those in China, Moldova and India.
