In Geneva, PM meets WTO chief

VGP– PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng on Monday had a working session with Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Warmly welcoming PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and his entourage, WTO chief Pascal Lamy highly spoke of economic achievements gained by Việt Nam for the past three years after joining the WTO membership.

Mr. Pascal Lamy showed his admiration to Việt Nam’s positive growth rate in 2009 despite the global economic and financial crisis, describing the Southeast Asian country a rising star in the region.

He suggested Việt Nam further perfect its legal system in conformity with WTO standards and vowed to support Việt Nam’s global economic integration.

PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng briefed some positive results of the admission to WTO, especially in GDP, trade and foreign investment.

Last year, Việt Nam managed to secure a GDP growth rate of 5.32% and attract over US $21 billion of foreign investment capital.

PM Dũng stated that, as president of ASEAN in 2010, Việt Nam and other ASEAN peers want to conclude the Doha Round for the sake of underdeveloped and developing countries.

According to the Vietnamese PM, ASEAN is confident that the conclusion of the Round will surely facilitate trade development and market penetration while reducing trade protectionism.

ASEAN is expected to play an intermediate role in 2010 in finishing the Doha Round on schedule.
