Under the plan, the city’s authority encourages organizations and individuals to build houses for the poor households or provide them with preferential loans to upgrade their houses.

The beneficiaries are all poor households with the annual income lower than the city’s average. However, they must permanently reside in the city in dilapidated houses.

The municipal authority is also asking the Ministry of Construction and the PM for permission to increase the maximum loan for house repair to VND 15 million per household from the current VND 8 million.

The city’s People’s Council has just released a report on supervising the implementation of the housing program for workers.

According to the report, 37,165 enterprises operating in Hồ Chí Minh City are employing 892,960 workers, including over 625,000 from neighboring provinces. So far, the city has built 1,294,640 square meters of accommodation for workers. Besides, 18,364 households and individuals have built boarding houses, over 1.2 million square meters in area, to accommodate 414,272 workers.

In the period of 2009- 2015, the city plans to finish 18 housing projects (44 ha in total) to serve 112,250 workers.
