Gov’t requires supervision over nuclear safety

Under the newly-ratified decision, organizations and individuals will be put under nuclear supervision if they own nuclear piles for research purposes, nuclear power plants, uranium enrichment facilities as well as radioactive waste treatment facilities.

Accordingly, they will have to make periodical reports on nuclear accounting and safety to the Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) while ensuring necessary supervision over nuclear materials and radiation sources.

Within seven working days, organizations and individuals will have to inform the VARANS about the use and storage of nuclear materials and undergo investigations of the Agency and relevant international organizations.

Meanwhile, exporters and importers of nuclear materials are obliged to report their activities to the VARANS. 

Top prohibited behaviors

The decision forbids any illegal activity to access, seize, purchase, sell, produce, assemble, transport and utilize materials and equipment which are put under nuclear control. 

The Government also bans the refusal of providing nuclear information, the provision of wrong information about nuclear materials, and the prevention of investigations of competent agencies.  

Under the decision, all nuclear-related activities will be supervised by international nuclear inspection agencies to which Việt Nam is a member.

The Ministry of Science and Technology will be in charge of designing and managing nuclear control data and prepare annual reports to the PM./.
