Good results seen in afforestation

VGP - Following Việt Nam's efforts in protecting and replanting forests, the forest-covered area was raised from 33.2% in 2000 to 39% in 2008 with the annual increase rate of 0.6% on average.

The 50-million-ha Reforestation Program by 2010 has been vigorously implemented to cover bare land and hills.

Many localities have attached attention to planting riverhead forests, protective forests, preserving the existing forest area and preventing deforestation.

Besides, the country is making attempt to preserve natural land and characteristic biodiversity.

Việt Nam now boasts for 126 natural reserves stretching out in 2.5 million hectares, up 28% against 10 years ago when the country accessed the international convention on biodiversity.

In an effort to fulfill its United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Việt Nam determines to take consistent measures to enlarge forest areas, reduce deforestation and overexploitation of forest resources, and preserve biodiversity reserves.
