French firm to invest US $31 mil in telecom projects

VNGOP – French firm Alcatel-Lucent said that it has signed two contracts worth more than US $31 million with the Việt Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

The deals were inked during the eighth Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Forum, which was held in Hà Nội on Nov. 22-23, drawing more than 350 business executives, policymakers and economic experts from France and ASEAN member countries.

Under the first contract worth US $22 million, Alcatel-Lucent will provide the VNPT with over 1 million-line equipment.

Under the second contract worth US $9.7 million, Alcatel-Lucent will provide modern equipment for VNPT’s project to upgrade more than 270,000 fixed, mobile and Internet transmission lines in 2008.

Alcatel has entered Việt Nam’s market since 1975 and regarded the country as one of its most attractive markets in the Southeast Asian region.

At the forum, French Secretary of State for Enterprises and Foreign Trade Herve Novelli said that his country wishes to increase investment in Việt Nam and ASEAN member countries.

The 8th ASEAN Forum was jointly organized by the French Foreign Trade Advisors (CCEs), Medef International, Ubifrance – a French Agency for International Development of French businesses, the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Employment.
