First CDM environment project launched in VN

VGP - In response to the World Environment Day (June 5), a project on collecting and using gas emissions at the Nam Sơn rubbish dump was ground-broken today in Hà Nội. This is the first environment project developed under the clean development mechanism (CDM) in Việt Nam.

The project, worth of US $7.5 million, is expected to help reduce gas emissions from the rubbish dump, particularly methane, one of the most harmful gases causing the global climate change.

All the gases collected from the dump will be used to produce clean energies.

It is estimated that the total volume of carbon dioxide collected will amount to nearly 2.3 million tons within the period of 2009-2016.

The project will help not only bring back economic benefits to the city but also protect its environment and create more jobs for locals.

Moreover, it will also effectively contribute to the country's environment protection.

Việt Nam's Urban Environment Limited Company (URENCO) and PJI–LFGC Việt Nam, a Canadian CDM project developer, are chosen to carry out the project.
