The Deputy PM made that statement at a meeting on December 10 in Can Tho City to review the five-year development of transport infrastructure facilities in the Southwest.

Completed transport infrastructure projects in the region cost VND58,778 billion, he added.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has taken measures to attract social investment in transport infrastructure, including five Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects worth VND39,375 billion and seven projects in form of Built-Operation-Transfer (BOT), valued VND22,762 billion.

In the phase from 2010 to June 2015, the region transported 4.6 billion passengers and 468.25 million tons of goods, up 4.4% and 4.9% per year, which contributed to the region’s socio-economic development in particular and the nation in general.

The MOT cooperated with localities in the region to promote all forms of transport such as roads, seaways, aviation and rural transport. As many as 34 projects to upgrade roads, worth VND52,471 billion, were completed.

In the next five years, the region will mobilize VND86,319billion for launching new projects, focusing on developing roads with VND65,000 billion.

Deputy PM Ninh supposed that the development of transport infrastructure over the recent five years in the Southwest has helped connect provinces in the region and between localities in the region with Ho Chi Minh City and other countries, contributing to enhancing the region’s socio-economic development and raising local people’s living standards.
