Dioxin cleanup project kicked off in Bien Hoa

Bien Hoa Airbase area in the southern province of Dong Nai is a hot spot having the highest levels of dioxin contamination in the country.

The project, estimated to cost US$390 million, will complete within 10 years. The U.S. side vowed to collaborate with Viet Nam and its Defence Ministry in addressing war consequences while continuing to foster bilateral economic, cultural and security relations.

The U.S. committed to cooperating with the Vietnamese Defence Ministry to solve all legacies of war in Viet Nam as well as strengthen economic, cultural and security relations between the two countries.

Since 2000, the U.S. has cooperated with Viet Nam in dealing with humanitarian issues and war legacies, including removing post-war unexploded ordnances, identifying remains of servicemen missing in action and treating dioxin.

By the end of 2018, USAID and the Vietnamese Defence Ministry will also complete the six-year project on dioxin decontamination valued at US$110 million at Da Nang Airport.
