Bigger budgets for better education

VGP - The United Nations of Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) just announced that Việt Nam ranks the 79th in terms of Education for All Development Index (EDI) among 129 surveyed countries.

The remark was given in UNESCO’s annual publication Global Monitoring Report 2008 titled “Education for All by 2015, Will We Make It?”

Like other nations in Southeast Asia, Việt Nam is encountering with the soaring school drop-out rate (up to 1 million pupils).

According to the report, biggest challenges in the region are how to lower the unlettered children, perfect educational quality, expand pre-school education, raise the adult literate rate, and enhance high-school enrollment.

Deputy Minister of MoET Nguyễn Vinh Hiển maintained that those challenges are great concerns, particularly in disadvantageous areas and among ethnic minorities.

The Vietnamese Government and the education sector have given priority to strongly financing education development so as to improve educational quality in difficult regions and remote areas. Furthermore, more regular and community education centers will be established to help all Vietnamese citizens have equal rights in accessing to educational services.

Việt Nam pledged to realize six goals of the Program on “Education for All by 2015” including expanding pre-school care and education; popularizing compulsory primary education by 2015; providing learning and life skills programs to young people and adults; cutting the adult illiterate rate by half in 2015; achieving gender parity by 2005 and gender equality by 2015; and improving the quality of education.
