Agriculture sector’s performance reviewed

VGP – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on December 24 organized a meeting to review the sector’s performance in 2011 and launch goals for 2012.

The total value of aquaculture, forestry and agriculture products has increased by 5.2% against last year, of which aquaculture took the lead, followed the forestry and agriculture, according to the General Statistics Office.

Specifically, this year’s rice output is estimated at 42.2 million tons, or 2.2 million tons higher than in 2010, of the figure, 7.17 tons were shipped. The total export turnover of agriculture, forestry and aquaculture products is estimated at US $25 billion, up 29%.

Four items of the sector that gained the export revenue of over US $3 billion each include aquaculture (US $6.1 billion), wooden products (US $4.1 billion) and rubber (US $3.3 billion).

Moreover, coffee and cashew exports earned some US $2.7 billion and US $1.5 billion, respectively.

Regarding next year’s goals, the sector set the growth target of 2.5 – 2.6% with total export value of US $25.5 – 26 billion.

The forest coverage is expected to reach 4.1%.
