Gov't issues action plan to implement socio-economic development orientations for Mekong Delta

VGP – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed Decision No. 78/NQ-CP issuing an action plan to implement Resolution No. 13-NQ/TW dated April 2, 2022 of the Politburo on orientationss for socio-economic development and defense and security safeguarding in the Mekong Delta until 2030, vision to 2045.

By 2030, the region's GDP is expected to grow by 6.5-7 pecent on average and its economy size is projected to increase by 2-2.5 times higher than that in 2020, according to the Resolution.

Agriculture-forestry-aquaculture will account for 20 percent of the region's GRDP while industry-construction and service sectors are expected to make up 32 percent and 46 percent, respectively.

The Resolution targets to raise the GRDP per capita to VND146 million per year, urbanization rate to 42-48 percent, trained labor rate to 65 percent, and forest coverage rate to 7.5 percent.

The region's poverty rate is expected to reduce by 1.5-2 percent annually.

The Mekong Delta comprise Can Tho City and 12 provinces, namely An Giang, Dong Thap, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, and Kien Giang. It is one of the largest and most fertile deltas in Southeast Asia and the world.

The Mekong Delta comprises Can Tho City and the provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Bac Liêu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang. It is one of the largest and most fertile deltas in Southeast Asia and the world.

Though the region is the country's biggest fruit and rice hub, it is facing critical challenges, including climate change.

The Government issued the Mekong Delta Regional Plan which provide a long term, cross-sectoral integrated planning and a stronger legal basis for the development of the region./.
