The PM assigned the Việt Nam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) to be the chief investor, in charge of selecting contractors for consultancy, purchasing of satellites, insurance, and launching services.

Earlier, the Ministry of Information and Communications had authorized the VNPT to exploit the orbit for VINASAT-2 at 131,80E and spend around US $290-350 million on the project.

The VINASAT-2 project targets to better the domestic telecommunications infrastructure and maintain Việt Nam’s right to use its orbit position.

It was reported that with VINASAT-1, launched on April 19, 2008, Việt Nam became the 93rd country in the world and the sixth one in Southeast Asia to have specific satellites.
