Around VND 400 tril. for seaport development

Vietnamese seaports are expected to handle 500-600 million tons of cargo in 2015, 900-1,100 million tons in 2020, and 2,100 million tons in 2030. To this end, Việt Nam will focus on building some international-standard deep-water seaports, especially the Vân Phong international transshipment port in the central province of Khánh Hòa which can receive container ships of up to 15,000 TEU.

Việt Nam plans to fully tap its seaports potential for economic development

From now to 2015, the country will prioritize investment in Vân Phong port, Lạch Huyện port (northern city of Hải Phòng), and quays at the Nghi Sơn Petrochemical Complex (central province of Thanh Hóa).

The country currently has 39 seaports which are classified into six groups: (1) northern seaports (from Quảng Ninh to Ninh Bình); (2) northern central ports (from Thanh Hóa to Hà Tĩnh); (3) central ports (from Quảng Bình to Quảng Ngãi); (4) southern central ports (from Bình Định to Bình Thuận); (5) southeastern region; and (6) the Mekong Delta.

In 2020, seaports in Group 1 are estimated to handle 163 million tons of cargo, and Group 2, 152 million tons. Nha Trang seaport will be upgraded to receive cruisers with capacity of 100,000 GRT, and the Cần Thơ seaport to serve 20,000 DWT vessels.

Việt Nam will mobilize funds for seaport development from all sources, both at home and abroad. It is encouraging all economic sectors to invest in constructing seaports, especially in the form of public-private partnership.
