Deputy PM Nhân: Best conditions should be given to ethnic minorities

VGP – It is necessary to facilitate and guarantee the access of people of ethnic minority groups to scientific knowledge and technological advances which should be made use to serve production and poverty reduction, stated Deputy PM Nguyễn Thiện Nhân.

Deputy PM Nguyễn Thiện Nhân made the statement on Saturday at the 1st Representative Congress of Ethnic Minority Groups of Thới Bình District of the southern province of Cà Mau.

The Deputy PM expected that local people of the district would further highlight their spirit of patriotism, national solidarity and mutual assistance in the common cause of socio-economic development.

He reiterated that the Government would continue to prioritize socio-economic development in poor districts, including Thới Bình.

At the Congress, many delegates showed their hope that the State further supports the preservation of cultural traditions of ethnic minorities, especially their languages, scripts, and musical instruments.

Representative congresses of ethnic minorities are being organized throughout Việt Nam. As planned, 261 district-level congresses, 52 provincial-level and a nationwide congress will be held.

Thới Bình District has a natural area of 63,997 ha and a population of 133,590 people. It consists of 11 communes and one town. Three major ethnic groups are Kinh, Khmer and Hoa. There are several ethnic minority groups, including Chăm, Tày, and Nùng.

The local authority has made great efforts to mobilize different resources for socio-economic development, infrastructure upgrading, and poverty alleviation. The district currently has 2,147 poor households (6.83%).
