Over 1,000 new species found in Mekong Delta
VGP - Domestic and international biologists have discovered 1,068 new species in the Mekong Delta in recent years, including 519 floral species, 279 fish species, 88 frog species and 88 spider species, according to the Hồ Chí Minh City Tropical Biology Institute.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the discoveries are “unprecedented” in comparison to the world’s regions of the similar landscape.
Besides wetlands, the Mekong Delta houses limestone mountains stretching from the southern province of Kiên Giang to Cambodia’s Kampot Province.
The WWF predicts that the region has the richest biodiversity in the world. In the mountains, biologists have found many endemic floral and animal species.
Domestic and foreign biologists have also detected some 100 species of snails, shellfish and invertebrates in caves, waters and islands in the delta.
The delta is now home to some 20,000 floral species, 1,300 fish species, 1,200 bird species, 800 frog species and 430 mammal species./.
