Russia pledges to continue active engagement in ASEAN-led forums

VGP - ASEAN leaders and Russian President V. Putin on Thursday attended the 4th ASEAN-Russia Summit to celebrate 30th founding anniversary of their dialogue relations.

The leaders highlighted the significance of the founding anniversary, welcomed the progress in the ASEN-Russia strategic partnership, and adopted the ASEAN-Russia comprehensive plan of action for the 2021-2025 period.

Both sides affirmed they will work closely together in repelling the COVID-19 pandemic and in ensuring safe, effective and fair distribution of vaccines to people in the region.

The sides agreed to strengthen collaboration, dialogue and information sharing to cope with security challenges, thus contributing to peace, security, and stability in the region through such mechanisms like the ASEAN-Russia high-level consultation on security issue and the ASEAN-Russia dialogue on ICT security-related issues.

President Putin emphasized that ASEAN is the trusted partner of Russia, affirming that his country is willing to help ASEAN manage the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigate socio-economic impacts induced by the pandemic.

Russia will continue active engagement in ASEAN-led forums and support ASEAN centrality and the bloc’s efforts in promoting dialogues, cooperation and confidence building.

The leaders agreed to celebrate the year 2022 as the ASEAN-Russia Year of Science-Technology and Industrial Cooperation, pledged to work together to enhance cooperation between ASEAN and the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU).

They underscored the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and safety in the region, and shared the visions and commitments to the common goal of upholding international law, promoting multilateralism, and building a rule-based regional and international order.

Addressing the summit, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said Viet Nam has always endeavored to contribute to the advancement of the strategic partnership and win-win cooperation between ASEAN and Russia.

Pham thanked Russia for provision of vaccines and medical supplies to ASEAN countries, including Viet Nam, and welcomed Russia’s readiness to transfer vaccine production technology to help ASEAN secure vaccines.

He suggested Russia step up cooperation with ASEAN in such fields like oil and gas and renewable energy towards achieving green and sustainable development goals.

Sharing the views expressed during the summit, PM Pham spoke highly of Russia’s role and contributions to ensure peace, security, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

Pham expects Russia would continue active engagement in ASEAN-led forums and support ASEAN centrality and the bloc’s efforts in fostering dialogue, cooperation, confidence building, respect for international law, effective response to emerging challenges, and maintenance of peace, stability and development in the region, including security and safety of navigation and aviation in the East Sea./.
