Cabinet convenes meeting to review socio-economic performance

VGP – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chairs a Cabinet meeting on Monday to review socio-economic performance and implementation of the 2021 public investment plan in the first eight months this year.

The Cabinet also discusses draft socio-economic development plan in 2022 and economic restructuring plan for 2021-2025 period.

In his opening remarks, PM Pham said the fourth COVID-19 wave driven by the highly infectious Delta strain has severely impaired economic activities, with industrial production and service sectors hit hardest, and produced heavy impacts on the public’ health.

As of 6:30 pm on Sunday, Viet Nam recorded 524,307 COVID-19 cases, including 520,013 community infections documented since April 27 when the fourth COVID-19 wave hit the country.

The nation has administered 21,445,181 vaccine doses out of the total 33 million doses it has received from different supply sources.

Given the aforesaid situation, the country has managed to maintain macro-economic stability and strengthen external relations.

In January-August period, Viet Nam’s export turnover soared by 21.5% on year to US$212.5 billion, despite a fall of 5.4% in August, according to the General Statistics Office.

Meanwhile, the index of industrial production in the reviewed period was estimated to expand 5.6 percent compared to 9.5 percent and 3.4 percent of the same period of 2019 and 2020.

Foreign direct investment inflows dipped by 2.1 percent to US$19.12 billion while disbursed volume rose by 2 percent to US$11.58 billion.

Pham underlined the need to quickly control the pandemic and step up vaccine diplomacy efforts to reboot economic recovery.

He also tasked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to figure out recovery plan in the new condition./.
