First brain-dead kidney transplantation in VN
VGP – Chợ Rẫy Hospital, the largest polyclinic in Hồ Chí Minh City, recently announced that it successfully transplanted kidney from brain-dead individual into a patient.

According to the statement, a 37-year-old female patient, suffering from final-stage chronic kidney failure, received kidney from her 19-year-old boy who died of cranial traumatism after a car accident.
The transplantation was a success and the patient went out of hospital.
Kidneys from brain-dead donors contribute to 95% of kidney transplantation in Europe and the US.
In Việt Nam, the Law on Human Organ, Tissue and Body Donation came into effect on July 1, 2007. Although it allows kidney extraction from brain-dead individuals, there was no case like this before.
It was the first successful case as kidney donor was a child of the recipient. Therefore, necessary procedures were much simpler.
The event marks the start of a program on transplanting kidneys from brain deaths in Việt Nam.
