Vietnamese athletes arrive in Japan for Tokyo Olympics 2020

A Japan Airlines flight landed at Narita International Airport of Japan at 6pm local time on July 19, carrying the Viet Nam Olympic team that will take part in the Games.

At the airport, the team were tested for COVID-19, which shown negative results. They are now allowed to stay at the Olympic Village for a 3-day quarantine before being able to train and join the competition.

Swimming athlete Nguyen Huy Hoang and track-and-field athlete Quach Thi Lan will carry the national flag of Viet Nam during the Opening Ceremony. This is the first time in the history of the Olympic Games that two athletes from an Olympic team carry the flag in the Opening Ceremony Parade.

The Vietnamese Olympic team comprises 43 members, including 18 athletes competing in 11 sports and 25 coaches and staffs. It is led by Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration Tran Duc Phan.

Before departing for Japan, the athletes received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

The Team's objective is to win medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

The 18 athletes of the Vietnamese Olympic team are: Le Thanh Tung and Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics), Quach Thi Lan (track and field), Nguyen Huy Hoang and Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting), Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (taekwondo), Do Thi Anh Nguyet and Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery),Nguyen Tien Minh and Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao (rowing), Nguyen Thi Tam and Nguyen Van Duong (boxing), Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (judo), Thach Kim Tuan and Hoang Thi Duyen (weightlifting).

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, athlete Hoang Xuan Vinh broke the Olympic record and won the gold medal in Men 10m Air Pistol (202.5pts) and later received a Silver medal in Men 50m Pistol. This makes Hoang Xuan Vinh defending Olympic Gold Medal in Men 10m Air Pistol.
