Speaking at the meeting, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said the current COVID-19 wave features with emergence of multiple outbreaks, multiple variants and high transmission speed.

In Bac Giang and Bac Ninh – the two biggest COVID-19 hotspots – more new positive cases are expected in the coming days but the situation has been gradually controlled, Nguyen said.

Major cities like Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh will continue detecting new community infection cases. However, both cities have deployed comprehensive measures to effectively control the situation, Nguyen added.

Regarding the vaccine strategy, Nguyen said the goal to achieve herd immunity in 2021 is a challenge due to global vaccine scarcity.

A part from stepping up homegrown vaccine research and development, the ministry has actively sought ways to expand access to external vaccine sources in order to realize the goal of 70 percent vaccine coverage for adults aged 18 and above.

Nguyen said residents in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh will get priority for vaccination as soon as possible in a bid to protect industrial parks there.

As of 6:05 am on Saturday, the national patient tally reached 6,657, including 3,594 cases confirmed since April 27 when the fourth COVID-19 wave began.

From April 29, Viet Nam conducted 1,132,626 tests for 2,106,308 people as part of the effort to early detect infection cases./.
