Weekly COVID-19 Update: Viet Nam reports 843 new COVID-19 cases last week

VGP - Viet Nam confirmed 843 COVID-19 cases, including 807 local infections and 36 imported cases from May 10-16, according to the Ministry of Health.

As of 7:30 pm on Sunday, the national caseload reached 4,175, including 2,709 locally-transmitted cases and 1,466 imported cases.

Among the imported cases, there are three foreign experts who came from India (two) and Pakistan (one) while the rest are Vietnamese nationals returning home from abroad.

During the past week, 50 patients were declared free of the virus, raising the total recoveries to 2,668. Viet Nam also reported two more COVID-19 deaths, raising the death toll to 37.

Since the emergence of the fourth wave of local transmissions on April 27, as many as 26 cities and provinces recorded 1,137 cases.

Also in the past week, Viet Nam received the second shipment of 1.682 million AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses through COVAX Facility, paving the way for the country to carry out the third phase of COVID-19 vaccination on greater scale compared to the previous phases.

As of May 15, as many as 977,032 frontline medical workers and members of the community-based anti-COVID-19 groups received COVID-19 vaccine shots.

Amid complicated developments of the pandemic around world, Viet Nam decided to temporarily suspend and restrict the entry of foreigners and overseas Vietnamese in order to focus on containing the COVID-19 outbreaks, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang on May 13./.
