Deputy Prime Minister receives guests

VNGOVNet – Deputy PM, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm on February 7 had separate receptions with Mr. Bill Rammell, UK Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education; and Mr. C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr., Vice President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Meeting the UK Minister of State Bill Rammell, Deputy PM, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm told him that his visit to Vietnam is significant in that it will help deepen educational cooperation between Vietnam and the United Kingdom. Praising the UK as one of the countries with a very developed education in the world that has attracted a large number of students from different countries, including Vietnam to study over there, the host said he hoped the UK will further assist Vietnam in education and training, especially training of high-quality human resources, which the Vietnamese Government is attaching great importance to.

Mr. Bill Rammell informed Deputy PM Phạm Gia Khiêm of the results of his earlier talks with Vietnamese Minister of Education and Training Nguyễn Thiện Nhân, in which the two sides discussed some cooperation plans on managing educational quality and sharing experience in the time to come. The guest boasted to the Deputy PM that there are now over 4,000 Vietnamese students learning in the UK and that the Kingdom, known to be keen on development of further and higher education, wants to see the cooperation strengthened not only between the two ministries of education but also universities of the two sides.

On the same day, Deputy PM, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm met Mr. C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr., Vice President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

On behalf of the Vietnamese Government, the Deputy PM thanked ADB for its effective assistance to Vietnam over the past time, saying ADB’s commitments are crucial to Vietnam’s national industrialization and modernization and its drive to become an industrialized country by 2020. He assured him that Vietnam has been trying in every area to show its good use of the funding aided by international organizations, including ADB.

In reply, ADB Vice President C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr. hailed Vietnam as a good example of managing development results. He said he expected Vietnam to act more drastically on its collaboration with regional countries, especially those in the Mekong Sub-region and the East-West Corridor to attract more of their investment. The ADB Vice President said now is the time for ADB to increase its finance for Vietnam and the bank is committed to do its best to carry out its action programs in the country. Mr. C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr. also said the two sides should expand their cooperation to more areas for better results.
