ASEAN’s energy intensity drops by 21.4% against 2005

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang Anh chaired the 38th ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM 38) on November 19 in Ha Noi.

Over the past years, ASEAN has cooperated to effectively implement the First phase of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC 2016-2025).

So far, the bloc has fundamentally fulfilled the preset goals including 21.4% energy intensity reduction, construction of nearly 4,00 km trans-ASEAN gas pipeline through six countries (namely Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Viet Nam), and the formulation of eight LNG terminals with a combined capacity of 37.5 million tons per annum.

ASEAN also increased the number of projects to raise exchange and purchase of electricity to 10,800 MW in 2020 and beyond 16,000 MW post 2020 and successfully implemented the first phase of the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project.

In addition, the association is looking to fulfilling the ambitious target of securing 23% of its primary energy from renewable sources by 2025.

At the AMEM 38, ASEAN energy ministers discussed and passed specific plans in the Second phase of the APAEC 2016-2025.

The ministers took the occasion to discuss on specific measures and plans to boost cooperation in energy savings and efficiency; achieve lower energy intensity rate in coming years and diversify sources of energy in ASEAN; and promote renewable energy.  

On this occasion, the 17th AMEM 3, the 14th EAS EMM, annual dialogues between the ASEAN Energy Ministers and the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and interntional organizations, the Ministers-CEOs dialogue, and the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) were held./.
