Int’l organizations continue supporting Quang Tri in bombs, mines clearance

VGP – Six international organizations committed to financing US$51 million for the central province of Quang Tri within five years to clear bombs and mines and handle with social issues.

Quang Tri is the most severely contaminated place for bombs and mines in Viet Nam.

These organizations including MAG, Peace Trees Viet Nam, Plan International, Zhishan Foundation, Project Viet Nam Foundation and Medipeace on October 2 signed a cooperative agreement on providing the financial aid for Quang Tri Province.

Accordingly, the sponsor aims to launch projects on bombs and mines clearance, addressing post-war aftermath, health, education, supporting handicapped and natural calamity prevention.

During 2014-2019 period, the province attracted US$100 million in aids from non-governmental organizations.

The province also has cooperative relations with 67 foreign non-governmental organizations and international organizations, mainly from the U.S., the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

As of September 2020, around 187 million sq.m of local land had been freed from bombs, mines and explosives, with 720,000 items of bombs, mines and explosive ordnance detected and destroyed.

Quang Tri is the most severely contaminated place for bombs and mines in Viet Nam. It has seen over 3,400 deaths and 5,100 injuries from UXO since the war ended in 1975.
