Established in 2016, the MLC is a sub-regional cooperation mechanism covers six countries along the Mekong River, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The overall goal of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation is to promote comprehensive cooperation towards building a responsible community for common interests in the sub-region.

The MLC aims to strengthen mutual trust and understanding, maintain peace and stability, and narrow the development gap in which, a major focus is placed on sustainable management and use of water resources in the Mekong River, and the enhancement of connectivity among the six countries.

Accordingly, member nations have agreed to implement cooperation content on three pillars, security - politics, economy and sustainable development, and culture - society and people-to-people exchanges./.
